Mary I of England:15 facts about her


1-She was born on 18 February 1516 at Greenwich Palace.

2-She was the 5th child of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon.

3-She was the only survivor child of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon's marriage.

4-She was declared illegitimate and was no longer called "Princess" but rather "The Lady Mary", when her father married a second time in 1533.

5-Mary was proclaimed Queen on 19th July 1553 at St.Paul's Cathedral, London.

6-She was England's first female monarch.

7-She ruled for just 5 years.

8-She earned the nickname "Bloody Mary"

for having burned nearly 300 English Protestants.There is a drink named Bloody Mary after her.

9-She married Prince Philip of Spain on 25 July 1554 at Westminster Cathedral.(after 2 days of their meeting)

10-She was declared pregnant but no child was born.(Her doctors predicted the baby would come on 6th June, then 24th June, and later on 3rd July, but finally nothing happened)

11-Philip found her unattractive.

12-Mary died on 17th November 1558 at St.James's Palace.

13-She was buried at Westminster Abbey on 14th December 1558.

14-During Elizabeth I's reign Mary's tomb became buried under piles of stones .

15-James I ,then, built a tomb for both sisters(Mary and Elizabeth), so they rest together.
