Let the sun light your house

Have you ever seen this and wondered why? It's rather frequent while strolling to bump into these blocked windows. The reason why they are no longer used is because of the taxes on windows. During Elizabeth I times glass making evolved and so people began making glass windows popular. The more windows you had,the more light your house would get. At the times of William III a tax on windows was passed. It consisted on a fixed amount of money people had to pay according to the number of windows the house had.It consisted of two parts: a flat-rate house tax of 2 shillings per house (equivalent to £12.39 in 2015,and a variable tax for the number of windows above ten windows in the house. Properties with between ten and twenty windows paid a total of four shillings (£24.79 in 2015),and those above twenty windows paid eight shillings (£49.57 in 2015) But it was later ,during Georgian times, that the tax went unaffordable. As a consequence people began blocking the windows so as not to pay so much.

The Window Tax was abolished in 1851.
